Snapchat 101

Social media has become one of the most popular tools in terms of communication; and it’s only going to keep growing. While every platform has its own unique features, they all have one thing in common: they create communities. Being an avid social media user myself, I love being able to have constant access to all my social circles right at my fingertips.

Social media has also become a common way for businesses to promote their brand. In fact, it’s one of the most cost-effective online marketing tools. Throughout my internship with Atlas Communications, I have seen these results first-hand.

The Social Platform I Can’t Live Without

I can’t go a day without using Snapchat. Snapchat is one of the newer social media platforms (it was created in 2011), and since its launch, most of its users have been millennials like myself. Snapchat is a mobile app, which allows you to send photos and videos that disappear forever after a certain amount of time.

I love Snapchat because it provides such a unique social experience. My favourite feature on the app is the “snap streak.” Being rewarded for Snapchatting the same user for multiple days in a row is a great way for the app to develop user loyalty.

Snapchat is an undeniable marketing tactic for businesses. The trick is knowing how to keep your audience engaged. First, never post a Snapchat that doesn’t have meaning—everything you post on the app should have a clear message. Second, always remember that Snapchat is a unique platform, which means your posts should be just as unique. If you keep using the same method and posting the same things, your audience will eventually lose interest.

Before you post, consider your audience. Would they want to see this type of post? How often would they benefit from seeing a post? Knowing what they want to see and when they want to see it is crucial in terms of keeping their attention.

Using Snapchat as a marketing tool may require some strategic thinking, but it’s important for your business to stay relevant on current social media and market in a way that connects you with your customers.
