spring cleaning isn't just for your closets

Spring is in full force, which means the inevitable need to “spring clean” after a long, dark winter is becoming more daunting every day. While switching out your wardrobe and de-cluttering your home is important, let’s not forget about social media pages!

Why does social media need cleaning, you ask? Making sure that your online profiles are free of any content that carry a risk of damaging your reputation is crucial. Keeping your pages refreshed and updated will greatly impact you and your business.

If your social pages need a revamp, but you’re not quite sure where to start, we’ve come up with a few tips to help you get underway!

#1. Clear out irrelevant content

Social platforms do just what the name entails; create a social space for friends, family and co-workers to interact online. Therefore, most of us are guilty of sharing one too many articles from time to time, or uploading a photo that seemed perfect in the moment but quickly lost its charm.

It’s good practice to skim through your profiles and newsfeeds every so often and make sure all your content is relevant, up to date, and represents you the way you want to be publicly viewed.

After all, you never know who’s looking.

#2. Update your profile photos

When was your current display picture taken? If you can’t remember, then it’s probably a good time to change it to a more recent photo. Your profile photo is one of the first thing somebody sees when searching you online. And as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words!

Always make sure your profile photo is simple, appropriate, and most importantly, recent.

#3. Clear up your storage

Are your social media pages full of old, irrelevant conversation history? Clearing out messages you no longer need will not only keep your pages feeling fresh and clean, it will also make it easier to find the information you do need.

If you can delete something and it wouldn’t be a difference to you, then you should probably delete it.

#4. Follow inspirational people

The users we choose to follow on social media can quickly accumulate over time. Every few months, make a note to look through your followings list and unfollow accounts that have no benefit to you. A large portion of our lives are spent on social media, and it is important to engage yourself with motivation and inspiration! The people that you follow should deliver a positive, relevant message.

Spring cleaning can be daunting, but the results are well worth it—especially when it comes to your digital footprint.

"Our company is very new to social media with no experience or expertise. We initially approached Atlas Communications for out-sourcing our social media needs. As we progressed in our social media plans we decided it would be best to hire in-house. Atlas was flexible and worked with us to customize our needs. They provided ongoing consulting and training for our social media staff and market team. They were extremely patient with our embarrassingly little of knowledge of social media. We are grateful for their help, knowledge, flexibility and supportive attitude. A welcome find in the vast sea of social media blur. "
