There’s no denying that Snapchat has taken the world by storm since its launch in September 2011. Today, there are over 26 million users in the U.S on the app, and about 4 million Snapchats sent out on a daily basis.

Snapchat is a mobile app, which allows you to send photos and videos that “self destruct” after a certain amount of time. Once a Snapchat has played for its allotted amount of time, it deletes forever.

The app has gone from being a leisurely photo-and-video-sharing-platform, to an undeniable marketing tactic for businesses. That being said, it’s a little tougher to use than most other popular social media platforms.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind while marketing via Snapchat:

Use the Time Constraints to Your Advantage

Snapchats only last a few seconds; once they disappear from the screen they are gone forever (unless you’re quick enough to capture a screenshot – but beware, the snap sender will be notified you saved the photo). Although this time constraint could be seen as an advertising burden, it can also be creatively used to your advantage.

For example, in 2014, The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) used Snapchat for a campaign about endangered species. The organization related the momentary existence of a Snapchat photo to the danger of extinction that many different species are currently facing. WWF created a photo series of endangered species called #TheLastSelfie, which were posted on their Snapchat account and encouraged to be shared on social media.

Timing is Everything

Like all social platforms, Snapchat can be used to further an existing campaign, create a new campaign, or even send a quick greeting to your audience to keep on their radar. For most companies the biggest problem is not how to use Snapchat, but when to use it.

Currently, the average attention span of a person is approximately 8 seconds. This means that creating 120 second long Snapchat stories is likely going to be an ineffective marketing tactic. It’s important to be creating quick and efficient posts, so as not to spam your audience and lose their interest in your account.

For example, Snapchat could be used to post a quick photo of new merchandise or promotions.

Let Viewers go “Behind The Scenes”

Social networks such as Snapchat give your target audience the opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with your business. You can display your product or service while also injecting a human-like tone to your posts.

By allowing your viewers to get an inside look at the business, you’re building a stronger, more trustworthy relationship with them. Furthermore, they’re much more likely to connect with you if they can relate to you on a level.

Try portraying your brand’s personality on Snapchat. For example, on your company anniversary, have the staff sing happy birthday in a Snapchat video for your audience.
